Stability chemists are responsible for assigning an expiration date to a given product. Many factors need to be considered, including chemical and physical properties of the active ingredients, manufacturing procedures, formulations, containers and closures, storage conditions, and the stability of the article to maintain its quality or purity through the use of antioxidants or preservative. Detecting and identifying potentially harmful degradants is also important. Carmen Folk works as a stability chemist at Ferndale Laboratories and is tasked with many of these duties. Stability chemists monitor the quality of a product from the date of manufacture until a determined length of time has elapsed: from days to months to years! Carmen maintains FDA accountability while generating multitudes of data on the physical (appearance, pH, viscosity) and chemical attributes (API stability, impurities/degradants) of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Simply put, a lot of work goes into assigning an expiration date.
There is no admission charge, and free parking is available.
